"There's a lot I like about roller skating," Sharon Pascua said, getting in an early-morning skate at Magic Island. "This is the only sport that I'm good at and have a passion for."

SAFETY

Sharon Pascua urges that along with well-fitting skates (above), people interested in skating should also buy:

  • a helmet

  • knee and elbow pads

  • hand-protection gear.

Pascua adds that skating "smart, alert, legally and politely" will also keep skaters safe.

    RULES OF THE ROAD

As a former member of the National Skate Patrol, Pascua used to patrol Ala Moana Park.

"We talked to skaters about the Rules of the Road," she said.

Controlling one's speed is important, as it allows a skater to watch for pavement hazards, and because of the skates' stealthy roll, it is a good idea to "announce oneself to pedestrians," Pascua said.

    GETTING TOGETHER

Pascua is a member of Local 'Ohana Skating Team, which meets at Ala Moana Park, and anyone is welcome to join. Information is available online.

Whether you call it roller blading, inline skating or the old-fashioned roller skating, Waipahu's Sharon Pascua is hooked on the sport.

"There's a lot I like about roller skating," the 32-year-old said. "This is the only sport that I'm good at and have a passion for ... it gets me high!"

Pascua roller-skates three to five times per week for one to two hours each outing.

"I try to skate 10 miles or more, depending how I feel," she said.

Pascua says her favorite spot is in Kapolei near the fire station.

"It's a great place to get a good workout ... I can go as fast as I want and not worry too much about cars or pedestrians. Plus, the fire station is nearby for first aid," she said.

Pascua has been rolling along for nearly 11 years, and has taken various trips across the country to participate in skating events.

"I've traveled to many places to skate," she said, ticking off places such as Colorado, Florida, California and Minnesota.

On a church tour to Israel, Pascua packed her skates.

"I skated near the Sea of Galilee ... I first skated the parking lot (of the hotel) to get a feel of the road, then ventured out to wherever the road led to and back to the hotel," she said.

She skated along the shores of the Dead Sea.

Pascua plans on entering a marathon in Tahiti, as well as take up a skate adventure tour in the Netherlands.
