Man killed in Friday crash at national park is identified
A man killed in a Friday morning vehicle crash near Volcano has been identified as Edmund Carl Serrao, 48, Hilo, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported.
National Park officials said Serrao was Ka'ū-bound on Highway 11, near mile marker 34, at 7:15 a.m. when the vehicle he was driving crossed the center line, hit a rock embankment and flipped over, landing in the oncoming lane. Serrao was trapped in the vehicle and died at the scene.
A passenger, Kelsey Kelsom, 19, of Hilo was taken to Hilo Medical Center.
The crash, which happened within Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, may have been caused by a mechanical failure.
