U.S. Congressman-elect Charles Djou told a national television audience this morning that his victory in Saturday's special election represented "a major historic election."
In an interview on the FOX News Channel's "FOX and Friends" show, Djou said he overcame all odds in defeating former U.S. Rep. Ed Case and state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa.
"Back in January when this seat became an open seat for a special election I was polling in the teens," Djou said. "Everybody told me that this congressional seat was purchased and the wholly-owned property of the Democratic Party."
Djou received 67,610 votes, or 38.4 percent.
Hanabusa received 52,802 votes (30.8 percent) and Case 47,391 votes (27.6 percent).
Djou will finish the term of Neil Abercrombie, who resigned to launch a run for the governor's seat.
Djou is expected to leave for Washington later today to be sworn in.
The term expires in January, and Djou will have to run again in the November elections.
Djou told "FOX and Friends" he was eager to show Hawaii voters "that the trust they have vested in me ... is deserved."
Djou said his election reflected the frustration of citizens with government spending and repeated a phrase from his campaign: "I will never forget that every single dollar the government spends comes from a family like yours."
