University of Hawai'i associate athletic director and senior woman administrator Marilyn Moniz-Kaho'ohano-hano is the recipient of the Nell Jackson Administrator of the Year Award.

The award is annually given to the member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) who exemplifies the personal qualities and professional accomplishments of Dr. Nell Jackson, such as courage, conviction and perseverance and who is an advocate for gender equity and diversity, according to the announcement.

Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano is among nine people to be honored at the Administrator of the Year, Honor and Distinction Awards Banquet at the 2010 NACWAA National Convention Oct. 12 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano was a volleyball player at UH in the late 1970s and has been a member of UH athletic administration for the past 20 years.

NINE 'BOWS QUALIFY FOR WEST PRELIMS

Nine University of Hawai'i athletes have qualified to participate in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship's West Preliminary Round next week at the University of Texas. Top qualifiers in Austin advance to the national championship, June 9 to 12 at Eugene, Ore.

The Rainbow Wahine who will compete in Austin are:

• High jumpers Amber Kaufman, Sarah Saddleton and Samantha Balentine. Kaufman ranks first in the West and nationally with a jump of 6 feet, 3.25 inches this season. She was the silver medalist at the NCAA Indoors in March. Saddleton is ranked ninth in the region after clearing 5-9 at the WAC Championships. Balentine is ranked 35th with a jump of 5-8.

• Throwers TeRina Keenan (discus), Karen Guravska (javelin), Lauren Cutler (javelin) and Emma MacCorquodale (hammer). Keenan ranks sixth in the West after throwing 176-4 to win a WAC title. Guravska is 34th in javelin at 149-6 and Cutler is 46th, after throwing a personal-best 143-5 at the WAC Championships. MacCorquodale ranks 39th in hammer at 181-7.

• Thalia Amanakis is ranked 20th in 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.63.

• Triple jumper Madara Apine is 27th in the West at 41-5.75.

The top 48 from the East and West in each event compete next week. The top 12 from each region advance to nationals.

SOCCER

FIRST OF THREE CAMPS WILL BE HELD IN JUNE

The University of Hawai'i women's soccer program is hosting three camps this summer, led by camp director and former Rainbow Wahine standout Taryn Fukuroku, a former Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

The first camp is from June 8 to 11, for boys and girls ages 6 to 14. For $180 per camper, attendees will improve their basic soccer skills and techniques.

The second camp runs from July 26 to 28, also for boys and girls, ages 6 to 14. Cost is $150 per camper or $75 for a half-day session. Like the first camp, it is designed for newer players who will be given appropriate training.

The final camp focuses on goal scoring and goalkeeping, and runs from Aug. 2 to 5. It is for boys and girls ages 12 to 18, and costs $150 per camper. The camp is designed to fine tune and improve the technical aspects of goal scoring and saving goals.

PROS WILL CONDUCT FREE CLINIC AT UH

Tennis Across America Day will be celebrated by the U.S. Professional Tennis Association's Hawai'i Division with a free clinic next Saturday, May 29, at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Complex.

It will run from 10 a.m. until noon and is open to players of all ages and abilities. It will be hosted by USPTA-certified professionals.

Several courts will be used with each offering a different stroke progression, drill, game or activity, including Cardio Tennis and USTA's QuickStart program. Racquets and other equipment will be provided at no charge.
