More than 60 years after leaving Farrington High School, 'ukulele virtuoso Eddie Kamae will pick up his diploma today.
Drafted into the Army during his senior year, Kamae returned to the classroom after 18 months of military service. One week before commencement, he learned he was a class shy of the graduation requirement. He went to summer school, but got bored on the first day: "I just walked out. I told myself: 'I don't need that piece of paper. I'm going to find my way in this world.' "
And he did. Kamae, 82, is an accomplished award-winning musician, composer, singer and documentary filmmaker, best known as the founder of the Sons of Hawai'i. His advice to the 2010 graduating class? "Now it's important to have a piece of paper," Kamae said. "It helps set your course" for the future.
