ST. LOUIS — Hanley Ramirez shrugged off the boos and got back to work.

Ramirez returned to the Florida Marlins' lineup with three hits and Anibal Sanchez threw seven impressive innings last night in a 5-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

"I'm happy to be in the lineup," Ramirez said. "That's what I like to do, play every day."

As for the negative reaction? "I'm in St. Louis, not Florida."

Ramirez was yanked from Monday's game for loafing and benched Tuesday after criticizing manager Fredi Gonzalez and teammates. The two-time All-Star apologized individually to the Marlins before the game.

Ramirez was booed before three of his first four at-bats. The reigning NL batting champion answered with three singles, two of them infield hits, and drove in a run.

Dan Uggla and Cameron Maybin homered in the same inning for the second straight game for Florida, which has won six of seven. The Cardinals lost for the first time in three games since Albert Pujols was moved to cleanup.

"The little distraction that we had going on, that's in the past," the Marlins' Jorge Cantu said. "We're grown-ups, we're professionals.

"Now we have a good thing going here, and we don't want any kind of distractions," he said.

Cardinals rookie Jaime Garcia worked five scoreless innings and has not allowed a run in 19 innings at home. He escaped trouble in all but one inning, stranding nine runners, although the outing was his shortest of the year by an inning.

"Yeah, I was a little bit off," Garcia said. "I couldn't find my rhythm, but I was able to make good pitches when I needed them in tough situations.

"They've got a really good lineup, they were working the pitch counts."

Sanchez (3-2) allowed four hits in seven scoreless innings and didn't give up a hit his last four innings. He struck out Colby Rasmus all three times and threw a career-high 119 pitches.

"This is the most consistency that I've seen coming out of him," Gonzalez said. "That's good, that's really good."

Matt Holliday had two hits batting third for St. Louis, but struck out in the eighth against Clay Hensley with two on and none out to fall to .160 (8 for 50) with runners in scoring position. Pujols followed with a double-play ball.

"There was real hope there, Albert's the tying run on deck," manager Tony La Russa said.

Tom Gorzelanny (2-4) spaced three hits over 6 2/3 shutout innings before taking a line drive off his left ring finger, and Starlin Castro and Jeff Baker had RBI singles to lead visiting Chicago past Philadelphia for its fourth straight win.

Adam LaRoche hit two home runs, and Kelly Johnson, Justin Upton, Stephen Drew and Chris Snyder also went deep in support of Ian Kennedy (3-2), who allowed one run on three hits in eight innings as host Arizona hammered San Francisco.

PIRATES 6, BREWERS 4

Ryan Doumit drove in the go-ahead run and Steve Pearce added his third hit, a run-scoring single during a three-run bottom of the seventh inning, as Pittsburgh handed Milwaukee its ninth straight loss.

BRAVES 5, REDS 4

Rookie Jason Heyward doubled home Martin Prado from first base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to help Atlanta, which blew a four-run lead in the final two innings, end Cincinnati's four-game winning streak.

ASTROS 7, ROCKIES 3

Cory Sullivan broke a 3-all tie with a two-out, RBI single off Esmil Rogers (0-2) in the eighth inning, and Jeff Keppinger added a three-run double to cap the four-run eighth as host Houston snapped a five-game losing streak.

NATIONALS 5, METS 3

Pinch-hitter Adam Kennedy, Cristian Guzman and Ryan Zimmerman each drove in runs in a three-run bottom of the seventh, and Matt Capps got the final three outs for his major league-leading 15th save despite allowing Fernando Tatis' solo homer as Washington held off New York.

Adrian Gonzalez homered and had a career-high six RBIs, Will Venable had four hits, including a triple and two doubles, and Jon Garland (5-2) allowed four runs and nine hits in five innings as visiting San Diego put an emphatic end to Los Angeles' nine-game winning streak.

Nelson Cruz hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to lift Texas over Baltimore. Texas' Josh Hamilton hit a ball over the left-field fence in the fourth that was ruled a double even though the ball clearly sailed over the 14-foot fence before ricocheting back into play.

Yuniesky Betancourt hit a three-run double in a five-run top of the ninth inning off reliever Kerry Wood (0-2), who tossed his glove into the stands as he walked off the field to a chorus of boos, as Kansas City rallied to beat Cleveland.

ANGELS 3, WHITE SOX 2

Torii Hunter hit a two-run homer, his third home run in three games, and Joe Saunders (3-5) allowed just one run and four hits in 7 2/3 innings as visiting Los Angeles beat Chicago after losing consecutive games to Texas.

Justin Verlander (5-2) pitched a four-hitter, late lineup addition Casper Wells drove in two runs and visiting Detroit beat Oakland, spoiling Dallas Braden's (4-4) first appearance at home since throwing the majors' first perfect game this season on May 9.

RED SOX 3, TWINS 2

Clay Buchholz (5-3) allowed two runs on five hits in eight-plus innings and was helped by double plays in the first and seventh to face just four batters over the minimum, and David Ortiz hit a two-run homer as the Red Sox beat Minnesota on a rainy night in Boston.

BLUE JAYS 3, MARINERS 2

Brett Cecil (3-2) gave up two runs and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings, and Kevin Gregg hung on for his 12th save in 13 chances as visiting Toronto handed Seattle its fifth straight loss. After the game, Seattle transferred left-handed starter Erik Bedard (shoulder) from the 15-day to 60-day disabled list.
