Hertz on Kauai cited for underground storage tank violations

Advertiser Staff

The Hertz Corporation has been hit with a more than $60,000 fine for missing records related to violations of an underground storage tank on Kauai.

The state Department of Health yesterday said it has issued a Notice of Violation and Order against the company because rules require that owners and/or operators of underground storage tanks have all documents immediately available for inspection and be maintained at the site. The health department said that rule is an important part of assuring proper leak prevention and response.

Small-field citations for violations in 2004, 2006 and 2008 were issued to the company before the health department cited the Hertz Rent-A-Car facility on Kaua'i $63,562.50 for the following missing records:

  • Release detection at least every 30 days. ($59,062.50)

  • Third-party performance certifications for currently installed leak detection equipment. ($1,000)

  • Annual maintenance reports. ($1,250)

  • Operating manuals for currently installed leak detection equipment. ($1,000)

  • Assurance of financial responsibility. ($1,250).

Hertz Corporation may request a hearing to contest the allegations or order.
