Anthony Salter fulfilled his commitment to the University of Hawaii men's basketball team by signing a national letter of intent today to play for the Rainbow Warriors.
"For this time of the year, it's a huge get," Hawaii head coach Gib Arnold said. "He's got quickness — the kind of quickness that's hard to teach. He has an ability to get by his man without a ball screen, and that can be very valuable in a point guard."
Salter, who is 5 feet 11 and 175 pounds, averaged 12.6 points, 2.8 assists and 2.2 rebounds per game as a sophomore at Iowa Western Community College last season.
He will be a junior at Hawaii next season and will have two seasons of eligibility.
Several websites ranked Salter among the top junior college point guards in the country.
He signed a letter of intent to play at Auburn during the early signing period in November. But after head coach Jeff Lebo was terminated in March, Salter requested and received a release from Auburn.
"We were fortunate to be in the right place at the right time," Arnold said. "Had there not been a coaching change, he'd be at Auburn right now."
Salter is one of eight new recruits who will join the 'Bows next season.
The others are guard Bo Barnes, forward Dominick Brumfield, guard Jordan Coleman, forward/center Vander Joaquim, point guard Bobby Miles, forward Josten Thomas, and forward Trevor Wiseman.
