BYUH women reach NCAA final

The Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's tennis team advanced to today's title match of the NCAA Division II Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The Seasiders (32-0) rallied to beat Lynn (Fla.), 5-4, yesterday and will face two-time defending champion Armstrong Atlantic (Ga.) (32-0) in the title match. Armstrong advanced by beat Hawai'i Pacific, 5-0.

Lynn (25-4) won two of the three doubles matches to start the morning with a 2-1 lead, then extended its lead to 4-1 after two singles victories.

Elwen Li and Sophia Simmons then swept their singles matches for BYUH and Yuan Jia tied the match at 4-4 after a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles. BYUH's Jenny Chin battled through dehydration and rallied for a 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 win in her singles match to seal the win for the Seasiders.

HPU lost all three of the doubles matches against Armstrong, then lost two of the singles matches to end its season at 21-5.

BASEBALL

HPU EARNS FIRST REGIONAL VICTORY

Blake Amaral hit a leadoff home run in the sixth inning to break a 3-all tie, and Toby Inouye pitched a complete game to lead Hawai'i Pacific to an 11-3 victory over Chico State in the NCAA II West Region baseball tournament yesterday at Compton, Calif.

It was HPU's first NCAA regional win after losing in its debut Thursday.

Amaral hit his homer to left field to give HPU a 4-3 lead. The Sea Warriors added an unearned run when Kale Sumner walked and later scored on a throwing error by the shortstop.

HPU scored six runs on six hits in the eighth, including a two-run double by Amaral.

Inouye (8-2) spaced eight hits while striking out three and walking two.

The Sea Warriors (38-11) play Cal State Dominguez Hills at 9 a.m. Hawai'i time in the double-elimination tournament.

TRACK AND FIELD

TWO FIFTH-PLACE FINISHES FOR UH

University of Hawai'i freshman Cecilia Durocher cleared 11 feet, 11.75 inches to finish fifth in the pole vault at the Western Athletic Conference Women's Track and Field Championships yesterday at Ruston, La.

K.C. Dahlgren of Idaho won at 12 feet, 11.5 inches. UH's Mallory Ramsey finished ninth (10-11 3/4).

In the javelin, UH's Lauren Cutler finished fifth (143-6) and Karen Guravska seventh (134-2).

In the shot put, UH's Careena Onosai was eighth (44-1 1/2).

In the long jump, UH's Jamilee Jimenez was ninth (18-5 3/4) and Madara Apine 12th (17-10 1/4).

Idaho leads the meet with 83 points going in to today's final day. UH is seventh with 18.
