The 'Iolani boys volleyball team used a renewed focus to make its point naturally.

The Raiders swept Kamehameha-Hawai'i, 25-22, 25-17, 25-18, last night in the quarterfinals of the New City Nissan Division I Boys Volleyball State Championships at Kaimukī High School.

"We just started this today, actually, where we're saying 'one natural,' where we want to score at least one natural point (when serving) every time we get back there," 'Iolani coach Mike Among said.

'Iolani (20-2) plays Kamehameha (18-4) tonight at 7 at Kaimukī in the semifinals.

"It's a long season, so throwing them something new like that helps focus them," Among said. "I've said it in different ways, but today we really focused in on it. And it worked."

The Raiders gained leads of 12-4 in the first set, 20-9 in the second, and 13-6 in the third.

"I think we did really well; we just have to really focus on siding out and not letting them go on runs," said 'Iolani setter/opposite hitter Logan Nowack, who had seven kills and 12 assists in double-duty action.

The Raiders prevented the Warriors from scoring runs, allowing them to rack up one or more natural points eight times in the match.

"If we can do one natural every time we serve, then those all add up," Among said. "We were able to do that in Game 2 especially, I think we had five rotations where we scored at least one."

The Warriors (14-1), the No. 3 seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, were led by Matthew Coghlan's 11 kills, but hit .076 as a team.

"We played a superb team," Kamehameha-Hawai'i coach Tom Poy said. "We were kept off balance by their offense and their defense."
