Aiona announces campaign team

Associated Press

Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona has named three aides to Gov. Linda Lingle to his gubernatorial campaign team.

Aiona, 54, who is seeking the Republican nomination for governor, announced his staff selections yester-day.

Two names are well known in Hawai'i political circles: Linda Smith, who is Lingle's senior policy adviser, and Miriam Hellreich, who was the governor's top political fundraiser in her re-election campaign four years ago. Both will reprise those roles for Aiona.

Aiona also has tapped John Peschong, who was Lingle's main campaign strategist for her 2002 and 2006 victories.

Former U.S. Marshal Mark "Dutch" Hanohano will be campaign manager, Keoki Leong will serve as political director and Travis Taylor will be communications director.
