UH freshman Balentine fourth in WAC heptathlon

University of Hawai'i freshman Samantha Balentine amassed a personal-best 4,725 points to finish fourth in the heptathlon today at the Western Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships in Ruston, La.
Balentine, who is from Lodi, Calif., was the only freshman to finish in the top eight and scored five points for the Rainbow Wahine, who are in third place heading into today's first full day of competition.
Yesterday, Balentine placed eighth in the long jump with a personal best of 16 feet, 7.75 inches; finished seventh in the javelin with a personal best of 96-2, then concluded the seven-discipline event with a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run with 2 minutes, 31.05 seconds.
Idaho's Ulrike Hartz won the event with 5,601 points, followed by Louisiana Tech's Jesseka Jones (4,969) and Idaho's Lindsay Goodman (4,924).
Idaho leads with 19 points, and LaTech is second with 8.
