BYUH, HPU women reach NCAA tennis semis
The Brigham Young-Hawai'i and Hawai'i Pacific women's tennis teams won their matches today to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
BYUH (31-0) defeated Northwood (Mich.), 5-0, in this morning's quarterfinals while HPU (21-4) beat California (Pa.), 5-2.
BYUH faces Lynn (Fla.) (25-3) in tomorrow's semifinals while HPU will play Armstrong Atlantic (Fla.) (31-0). Both matches will start at 3 a.m. HST.
The Seasiders took a 3-0 lead against Northwood after winning all three of the doubles matches. Yuan Jia and Elwen Li won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles, Ayako Ikeda and Shawni Porter won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles, and Jenny Chin and Salina Aranda won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles. The Seasiders completed the win with Li winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Jia claiming a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.
The Sea Warriors led California, 2-1, after winning two of the three doubles matches. Aleksandra Stankovic and Sandra Wikstrom won 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles and Zora Vickova and Ingrid Cseh won 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.
Vickova then won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Stankovic won her singles match, 6-1, 6-1. But Anastassiya Zherdeva won at No. 2 singles to help California cut the deficit to 4-2. A tiebreaking win by Cseh at No. 3 singles sealed the win.
The championship match is Saturday.
