City Council gives early approval to new budget with property tax hike

Advertiser Staff

The city's $1.82 billion operating budget got the second of three needed approvals by the City Council today.

The bill, Bill 15(10) now goes back to the council Budget Committee on May 24, and then back to the full council for a final vote on June 9.

Included in the budget is a plan to raise property taxes on non-occupant homeowners, those who own residential property but do not live in them.

Several council members are raising objections to the budget plan, noting that no other property tax classifications would see an increase in rates.

Council Budget Chairman Nestor Garcia said he believes there still could be changes to the budget to lessen, if not eliminate, the proposed increase for non-occupant homeowners.
