BYUH, HPU women advance, men lose at NCAA Championships

The Brigham Young-Hawai'i and Hawai'i Pacific women's tennis teams won their matches today to advance into tomorrow's quarterfinals at the NCAA Division II Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Meanwhile, both the BYUH and HPU men's teams lost their Round of 16 matches in Altamonte Springs today.

BYUH (30-0) defeated Clayton State (Ga.), 5-1. HPU (20-4) defeated Concordia (N.Y.), 5-1. HPU plays California (Pa.) (24-5) while BYUH plays Northwood (Mich.) (18-1). Both quarterfinal matches start tomorrow at 3 a.m. HST.

BYUH won all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead against Clayton State. Yuan Jia and Elwen Li won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, Ayako Ikeda and Shawni Porter won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles, and Jenny Chin and Salina Aranda won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

Jia won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Chin won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles to seal the win.

HPU took a 3-0 lead against Concordia after winning all three doubles matches to start the day. The No. 1 doubles team of Zora Vickova and Ingrid Cseh won 8-6, Aleksandra Stankovic and Sandra Wikstrom won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, and sisters Nina and Tinka Mihova won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

Tinka Mihova and Stankovic completed the win by winning their matches at No. 4 and No. 6 singles with 6-0, 6-0 scores.

In the men's bracket, Abilene Christian (Texas) defeated HPU, 5-4, and Concordia defeated BYUH, 5-0. HPU (19-3) fell behind 3-0 after losing all three of the doubles matches before putting on a rally in the singles matches to tie it at 4-4. Abilene's Edad Campbell outlasted Nikola Petrov, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 1 singles to seal the win.

BYUH finishes the season 20-4.
