The Waimea High baseball team played its first state tournament game since 2004 yesterday.

Never mind feeling jitters, the Menehunes came out swinging against Waipahu.

Mana Perreira-Alquiza batted 2 for 3 with a homer, three runs scored and four RBIs, and Waimea scored seven runs over the first two innings in a 12-5 victory over Waipahu in the Wally Yonamine Foundation Baseball State Division II Championships at Hans L'Orange Park.

"I thought the team played well. Came out focused. If we don't make mistakes, we will be successful," said Waimea coach Michael Rita.

Waimea, the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion and No. 3 seed, will play St. Anthony in the semifinals today at 4:30 p.m.

The Menehunes scored four in the bottom of the first on four hits, including Dylan Ishihara's two-run triple.

Waimea (11-2) added three in the second to go up 7-0. Two of the runners who scored drew walks, and the Menehunes stole three bases in the inning.

"That was our plan, to jump on them early, get ahead and stay up all the time," Perreira-Alquiza said.

The Menehunes added a run in the third on an RBI groundout by Perreira-Alquiza.

"They were swinging the bat and hitting the ball," said Waipahu coach Milton Takenaka. "Nothing you can do about that. The first three innings when we gave up those runs, that was the game right there."

Waimea sophomore right-hander Shylen Keuma pitched four-plus innings for the victory. Waipahu, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association runner-up, cut its deficit to 8-2 in the fourth on Samuel Chee's RBI triple and Cheyne Estanique's run-scoring single.

Keuma allowed three consecutive hits to open the fifth, including Estanique's RBI single, and was replaced by Kalani Fernandez, who started in center field. Fernandez entered with runners at the corners and allowed one inherited runner to score, which got Waipahu (10-4) within 8-4.

"We started being more aggressive," Takenaka said. "At the beginning, we were taking too many strikes."

Waimea regained momentum with Perreira-Alquiza's three-run homer to left, which extended the lead to 11-4. Mikeo Rita walked and Chyson Soares singled to open the inning.

"It was two strikes, I was just trying to protect," Perreira-Alquiza said. "I was looking for anything and he threw me a curveball."

Fernandez, a senior right-hander, allowed one run over the final three innings for the save.

"Kalani Fernandez came in, he's our closer," Michael Rita said. "He throws hard and throws strikes, and the defense made plays behind him."

Jarret Stinger, Alika Ham Deponte and Trevor Ventura each had three RBIs as the Trojans (9-1) put together two huge innings — the third and fifth — to rout the Wildcats (9-5) in five innings.

St. Anthony, the Maui Interscholastic League champion and No. 2 seed, scored six in the third on five hits, two errors, a walk and two hit batsmen to take a 7-0 lead. The Trojans added five in the fifth, highlighted by Stinger's three-run double.

Stinger, a junior right-hander, scattered eight hits with three strikeouts against Konawaena, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation runner-up.

Adam Andrade blasted a two-run homer during a six-run fourth inning as the Warriors (8-5) beat the defending state champion Spartans (2-15), the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion and No. 4 seed.

The Warriors busted loose with a six-run fourth, which put them up 8-3. Gideon Kalili led off with a single to left, and Andrade followed with a go-ahead two-run homer to right.

Kaimana Moike worked 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) for Kamehameha-Hawai'i, the BIIF champion.

Nathaniel Adams singled in Isaiah Adams with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning as Ka Makani (11-3) won a thriller against the top-seeded Rams (12-1).

Isaiah Adams had stolen second and came in on Nathaniel Adams' blooper just out of the reach of the Rams center fielder.

Hawai'i Prep, the BIIF's No. 3 team, sent it to extra innings against the OIA champions by scoring a run in the seventh on Jayce Bannister's one-out RBI single to center.
