A brushfire that was ignited in West Maui on Monday continues to burn, but is now 80 percent contained, firefighters said Thursday. Increasing winds caused sporadic and minor flare-ups Thursday.
A county news release says about 50 firefighters, including state Division of Forestry and Wildlife wildland firefighters, were on scene Thursday.
Predicted increases in wind conditions remain a concern.
The burn area remains closed to public access. Firefighters say there are dangers from roots burning underground, falling branches and trees, and smoldering surface material.
More than 1,100 acres have been scorched since the fire was first reported. No injuries and no damage to structures have been reported.
