Stanford sweeps Ohio State in NCAA men's volleyball semifinals

Stanford, which features seven players from Hawai'i, swept Ohio State, 30-25, 30-26, 30-17, today in the NCAA men's volleyball final four semifinals at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif.

Stanford, ranked No. 1 in the volleyball poll, will play Penn State Saturday for the NCAA title. The game will be telecast on ESPN2 at 1 p.m.

After a close first game, Stanford cruised in the final two games for victory.

The Stanford team features former Hawaii players Brad Lawson (Iolani), Kawika Shoji (Iolani), Erik Shoji (Punahou), Spencer McLachlin (Punahou), Jordan Inafuku (Kamehameha), Max Halvorson (Punahou) and Chandler Ka'a'a (Kamehameha-Hawaii).

Evan Romero led Stanford with 15 kills while Lawson added 14. Kawika Shoji distributed 44 assists for the Cardinals.

In the first game, Ohio State led 21-20 before Lawson accounted for two kills and two service aces to help Stanford gain control.

Romero added three kills during the closing stretch, including the game-winner from an assist from Kawika Shoji.

Lawson had six kills and three service aces in the first game while Shoji contributed 15 assists. Romero added four kills in the first game.

In the second game, Romero had nine kills while Lawson added four. Kawika Shoji added 19 assists and two blocks.

Ohio State grabbed a 1-0 before Romero's two kills gave Stanford a lead it would never relinquish.

In the third game, Kawika Shoji had two kills and 10 assists.McLachlin added two kills and two blocks. Lawson had four kills and a block.
