Arraignment for 7 Hawaii sit-in protesters over teacher furloughs delayed

Associated Press

HONOLULU — The arraignment of seven people who staged a sit-in at Gov. Linda Lingle's office last month to protest school furloughs has been delayed.

One of them, Clare Hanusz, said Wednesday that District Judge Colette Garibaldi postponed the arraignment until Monday so the defendants could sign letters stating they want one lawyer to represent them.

Their lawyer, Larry Kawasaki, has said they will plead not guilty. Several other protesters who received citations or were arrested on misdemeanor trespassing charges are to be arraigned in coming weeks.

The demonstrators are members of an informal parents group called Save Our Schools that was trying to prod Lingle into ending the furloughs.
