Hawaii designer Anne Namba to premiere collection in New York

Associated Press

HONOLULU — Hawaii designer Anne Namba is due to premiere a new collection in New York this week.

The collection features gowns fashioned from hand-painted embroidered kimonos and jackets made from Japanese shibori or tie dye material.

The clothes are due to be shown at a benefit for the Baryshnikov Arts Center on Thursday.

Namba says Mikhail Baryshnikov inspired the collection. She designed a fluid feel and look of the clothes in his honor.

Baryshnikov is asking ballet, flamenco and modern dancers to model the designs on the runway because the collection is about movement.

Ukulele player Jason Poole is expected to perform Hawaii songs before the show.
