Safeway Hawaii will kick off a month-long awareness and fundraising campaign for People With Disabilities Month, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at its Kapahulu store.

Local personalities, celebrities and chefs, including Miss Hawaii Raeceen Woolford, Chef Russell Siu of 3660 On The Rise and Steve Uyehara from Hawaii News Now, will be bagging customers' groceries to raise awareness and money for Easter Seals Hawaii and Special Olympics Hawaii. Mayor Mufi Hannemann will also make a special appearance at the store around 10 a.m.

Throughout People With Disabilities Month in April, shoppers will be able to donate to Easter Seals Hawaii, Special Olympics Hawaii and a select group of local autism-related organizations at their neighborhood Safeway. The campaign will be active at all 19 stores in Hawaii. Customers can add a donation to their purchase, or drop donations in the canisters located at each checkout stand.

"Safeway has had a long-standing relationship with these great organizations that provide services to those with disabilities," said George Glukfeld, district manager for Safeway Hawaii, in a press release. "The donations from our customers make a big difference to those with special needs and their families."

Last year, Safeway's nationwide campaign for People With Disabilities raised more than $11 million.
