Umlauft earns volleyball honor

University of Hawai'i freshman opposite Jonas Umlauft repeated as co-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week yesterday after leading the Warriors to a two-match split of No. 2 Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif.

In addition, UH (15-8 overall, 11-7 in MPSF) moved up one spot to No. 4 in the AVCA Division I-II Coaches Top 15 poll released yesterday.

Stanford and Pepperdine remained Nos. 1-2 in the poll with Brigham Young going from No. 4 to No. 3. Cal State Northridge dropped from No. 3 to No. 5.

Umlauft, a native of Stadtbergen, Germany, combined for 41 kills in six sets while hitting .395. He had a match-high in kills each night, including 21 at a .429 clip, in addition to one ace and two blocks in the 3-0 win on Saturday. On Friday, he went for 20 kills and .359 hitting in a three-set loss.

Stanford sophomore outside hitter Brad Lawson, a 'Iolani alum, was co-player of the week after combining for 30 kills, 12 digs, six assists and four blocks in six sets while hitting .532, as the Cardinal took over sole possession of first-place with a pair of 3-0 wins at Long Beach State and UC San Diego.

RICKETTS HONORED

University of Hawai'i softball player Stephanie Ricketts was named the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week yesterday.

It is the sophomore's second honor of the season and fourth of her career.

Ricketts went 2-0 last week with a 0.41 ERA in two complete games against San Jose State. She pitched 17.0 innings, allowing just three runs, one earned, and struck out eight. In Friday's WAC opener, she threw a season-high 10 innings for UH (25-11, 3-0 WAC).

Pitisi Tualau and Kayla Sakamoto combined on a five-hitter, and Keala Bertulfo and Kathryne Yoshimura homered as St. Francis beat Sacred Hearts, 10-1, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game yesterday at Crane Park.

HAWAI'I TRIO ADVANCE

Hawai'i surfers Melanie Bartels, Coco Ho and Carissa Moore advanced to the third round of the Rip Curl Women's Pro contest yesterday.

The first and second rounds were completed in 2- to 3-foot waves at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia.

Ho scored a convincing first-round victory to advance directly to the third round.

Bartels and Moore placed second in their respective first-round heats, but still were able to secure byes in the second round.

The contest is the second stop on the 2010 ASP Women's World Tour.

The Rip Curl Pro men's contest did not run heats yesterday. Hawai'i surfers in the men's event are Kekoa Bacalso, Andy Irons, Fred Patacchia Jr., Dusty Payne and Roy Powers.
