Man, 24, dies in Molokai crash

Advertiser Staff

A 24-year-old man who lost control of his truck Monday night on Molokai has died from his injuries in the crash.

Maui County Police said Scott Furtado of Kualapuu was traveling west on Kamehameha V Highway when he went off the road onto the right shoulder and hit a signpost. His 1999 Ford F150 then returned to the west-bound lane, crossed the centerline into the oncoming lane and went onto the left shoulder striking another signpost, a fire hydrant and fence post before overturning and crashing into the maintenance shed at the Molokai Shores condominium.

Police said Furtado was ejected from the vehicle and pinned under it. He was not wearing a seat belt and alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash.

Furtado's death was Maui County's fourth traffic fatality of the year compared with six at the same time last year.
