CBKB: Texas-Pan American men’s basketball sanctioned

Associated Press

McALLEN, Texas — The NCAA has found that the University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program committed major violations in recruiting between 2006 and 2008.

The NCAA said Tuesday that the program would face two years probation on top of a range of self-imposed penalties during the current school year. Those penalties included the loss of one basketball scholarship and one assistant coaching position.

The penalties stemmed from dozens of impermissible phone calls to prospective recruits, and inducements and an unauthorized home visit to one recruit.

The report, posted on the NCAA's Web site Tuesday, also noted that the university failed to adequately monitor its coaches' contacts with recruits.
