UH-Hilo softball wins pair on road

The Hawai'i-Hilo softball team won both its pool-play games yesterday at the Mizuno Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif.

In the first game, pinch hitter Jessica Schatz drew a bases-loaded walk to score Dana Lee with two outs in the bottom of the seventh as the Vulcans beat Humboldt State, 2-1. Christina Pedroza pitched an eight-hitter for Hilo.

In the second, Kanani Numata had a two-run double in the sixth and Sarah Weisskopf pitched a five-hitter as Hilo beat CS Dominguez Hills, 2-0.

Hilo is 25-10.

MORE SOFTBALL

HPU goes 2 for 3: Hawai'i Pacific won 2 of 3 pool-play games yesterday at the Mizuno Tournament of Champions.

In the first game, Sherise Musquiz pitched a three-hitter as HPU beat UC San Diego, 2-0.

In the second, CSU Monterey Bay beat HPU, 5-4, with the help of three unearned runs off Sea Warriors starter Ashley Valine.

In the third, Musquiz pitched a four-hitter as HPU beat CS San Bernardino, 3-2.

HPU is 26-2.

Chaminade drops 2: Chaminade lost both its games at the Mizuno Tournament of Champions.

In the first game, Kacie McCarthy pitched a seven-hitter in Chico State's 5-2 victory.

In the second, Rose Vargas and Krista Gould drove in two runs apiece in CS Dominguez Hills' 13-2 win in 4 1/2 innings. Chaminade's Keli-Grace Saniatan batted 3 for 3.

Chaminade is 13-21.

BYUH swept: Brigham Young-Hawai'i was swept by Academy of Art in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader yesterday at Brisbane, Calif.

In the first game, Sierrah Garcia pitched a four-hitter in the Urban Knights' 6-0 victory.

In the second, Kimberly Dauer pitched a seven-hitter with no walks and six strikeouts in Academy of Art's 12-1 win. BYUH scored its only run of the day on April Jorgensen's homer in fifth.

Academy of Art is 17-13-1 and 7-5; BYUH is 2-26 and 2-18.

BASEBALL

HILO SPLITS ON ROAD

Ronel Trias batted 3 for 4 and Hawai'i-Hilo scored five runs in the fifth to beat Grand Canyon, 7-4, and earn a split of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader yesterday at Phoenix.

The big inning gave the Vulcans a 6-1 lead.

In the first game, Jeff Urlaub pitched a five-hitter as Grand Canyon won, 5-0.

Hilo is 6-17, 2-12; Grand Canyon is 19-16, 10-8.
