A 65-year-old visitor from North Carolina collapsed and died Sunday after hiking to the top of the Sleeping Giant, Kauaçi County reported Monday.

The man went hiking up Mt. Nonou with his son and daughter-in-law Sunday morning. After reaching the top, he sat down at a picnic table, got up to take a picture and collapsed, the county said in a news release.
The man’s son administered CPR and the man briefly regained consciousness.
The daughter-in-law ran down the trail to find someone with a cell phone and contacted police at 10:36 am.
Firefighters from the Kapa‘a station responded by climbing up the mountain, while rescue specialists from the Lïhuçe Fire Station flew up in the department helicopter.
The man was placed in a Stokes litter and flown to Wailua Homesteads Park, where awaiting medics then transported him to Wilcox Hospital.
He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
An autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause of death.
