Advertiser Staff

A 28-year-old pedestrian died Wednesday night when a van hit him as he was walking on Honoapi'ilani Highway near Lahaina, Maui.

The man, hit shortly after 12:15 a.m., was dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the van, who was the vehicle's only occupant, was not injured.

Police had not determined if speed or alcohol were factors in the collision.

Honoapi'ilani Highway was closed from Kapunakea to Keawe streets until 4 a.m. yesterday.

Police said it was Maui's fourth traffic fatality of 2010, the same number as at this time last year.
