West-bound H-1 traffic was jammed for hours tonight at the Punchbowl Street on-ramp after a one-car accident that left the driver in critical condition.

The 61-year-old driver was taken by city paramedics in critical condition to a trauma center, said Bryan Cheplic, Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokesman. The man may have experienced a medical condition just prior to the crash, police said.
The accident was reported at 6:50 p.m. involving a 2004 Honda Civic silver four door that crashed into the off ramp guide wall head-on, police said.
Speed and alcohol were not reported to be factors in the crash, police said. The car's airbags were deployed and the man was wearing his seatbelt.

The crash forced the closure of the Pali on-ramp and inconvenienced west-bound drivers for miles on the H-1.
