Kua takes two-stroke lead at state amateur

University of Hawai'i sophomore TJ Kua shot a 3-under-par 69 yesterday to take a two-stroke lead in the second round of the Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Pearl Country Club.
Kua is at 3-under 141 with two rounds remaining. Bradley Shigezawa, a Punahou student, shot a 72 and was at 143. Six golfers were at 146, including first-round leader Brett Komoto, who shot a 79 yesterday.
Making the top-40 cut was 11-year-old Allisen Corpuz, who was tied for 17th after a 76—151. Defending champion Lorens Chan (73) also was at 151.
SOFTBALL
RAINBOWS WIN TWO
Katie Grimes went 2 for 4, including a two-run homer, and Jenna Rodriguez went 3 for 3 to lead Hawai'i to a 12-4 victory over Troy in the opening day of the Pepsi Malihini Aloha Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium yesterday.
Jessica Iwata went 3 for 3, scored three runs and had three RBI in UH's 9-0 victory over Loyola Marymount. Kaia Parnaby pitched a two-hitter, striking out 11 and walking one. Melissa Gonzalez also had three hits for the Rainbow Wahine.
The first game ended in the sixth inning and second in the fifth inning because of the eight-run differential rule.
Hawai'i is 16-8.
In other games, DePaul defeated Troy, 5-3, and Loyola Marymount, 8-3.
HPU SWEEPS
Hawai'i Pacific got shutout performances from Sherise Musquiz and Ashley Valine to sweep Brigham Young-Hawai'i in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader yesterday at Howard A. Okita Field in Kāne'ohe.
PacWest leader HPU improved to 15-1 overall and 7-1 in the conference. BYUH is 0-18 and 0-10.
Musquiz (8-1) pitched a three-hitter, striking out three and walking one in an 8-0, five-inning victory in the first game.
Valine (6-0) pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks in a 5-0 victory in the second game.
In other PacWest games, Hawai'i-Hilo swept Notre Dame Damur, 1-0 and 9-0 and Chaminade swept Dominican, 8-0 and 5-2.
SURFING
MANUEL WINS
Malia Manuel of Kaua'i won the Skullcandy Girls Junior Pro contest yesterday at Sebastian Inlet, Fla.
Manuel received $2,000 for the victory, and also earned points toward qualifying for the ASP World Junior Tour.
The contest featured many of the nation's top surfers age 20 and younger.
"The final really slowed down with the high tide, but I was lucky to find a couple of waves," said Manuel, 16.
The men's Ron Jon SI Junior Pro was also completed yesterday at Sebastian Inlet.
Keanu Asing of 'Ewa Beach placed second to Florida's Evan Geiselman.
