Hourlong power outage hits Sand Island, Nimitz, Iwilei
Some 2,500 electricity customers in the lower Kalihi area lost power for about an hour yesterday afternoon in a widespread outage.
The outage was reported at 2:42 p.m. and affected businesses and residents in the Nimitz Highway, Dillingham, Sand Island and Iwilei areas, said Darren Pai, Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman. Power was restored about 3:30 p.m., Pai said.
The cause of the outage was under investigation, although Pai said it might have been wind-related. The National Weather Service yesterday issued a high-wind advisory for the state. Trade winds were forecast at 30 mph with locally stronger gusts.
