The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended the high wind advisory for Maui County until 6 a.m. tomorrow, but canceled the advisory for the rest of the state.
The NWS said trade winds will be sustained near 30 mph over Maui County with frequent gusts to near 50 mph. The winds are expected to begin diminishing tomorrow, the NWS said.
Drivers in high vehicles are urged to use caution and the weather service warns of falling branches and possible power outages.
There is also a gale warning in effect until 6 a.m. tomorrow for the Pailolo and Alenuihaha channels. A strong high pressure to the north will produce strong and gusty trade winds. The weather service said the winds will diminish slightly tonight but winds and seas will remain elevated through tomorrow.
The east-facing shores of Oahu, Kauai, Maui, Molokai and the Big Island are again under a high-surf advisory until 6 p.m. tomorrow. The weather service said surf heights of 5 feet to 8 feet can be expected.
