Hawaii women surfers advance

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i surfers Coco Ho, Melanie Bartels and Carissa Moore advanced to the third round of the Roxy Pro women's surfing contest yesterday at Australia.

The opening round of the contest was run in 2- to 3-foot waves at Snapper Rocks, Queensland, Australia.

Ho and Bartels won their respective first-round heats. Bartels had one of the top heats of the day, receiving a two-wave score of 16.63 (out of 20).

Moore placed second in her first-round heat. The top two surfers from each heat advanced to the third round.

Moore, a senior at Punahou School, is making her debut as a member of the ASP Women's World Tour.

The men's Quiksilver Pro also completed part of its second round yesterday at Snapper Rocks.

Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore advanced to the third round by defeating California's Tanner Gudauskas, 16.1-15.56.

Patacchia was the only Hawai'i surfer to see action yesterday. Four others are still in the competition — Kekoa Bacalso, Andy Irons, Roy Powers and Dusty Payne.

Irons and Powers — who are both from Hanalei, Kaua'i — are scheduled to face each other in the second round.

UH SEEKING COACH TO SUCCEED BREWER

University of Hawai'i women's soccer assistant coach Gina Brewer has resigned from the program, and the search for her successor has begun.

Rainbow Wahine coach Pinsoom Tenzing said he's "looking at over a hundred applicants" for the position, calling the process "very tiresome."

The position was posted Jan. 15 and closed Feb. 2.

Brewer said she "enjoyed her time coaching for the University of Hawai'i very much and appreciate the opportunity given to me and I'm looking to continue coaching in another avenue."

Brewer, an assistant in 2008 and 2009, worked mainly with the goalkeepers and local recruiting.

Still on staff with Tenzing are longtime assistant Kathy Carey and former player Taryn Fukuroku.
