The state Land Use Commission today reclassified the Ka Iwi shoreline from urban to conservation, Gov. Linda Lingle's office said in a news release.

Lingle said the move came in a unanimous vote.

The area encompasses about 215 acres of state-owned land between Queen's Beach and the Makapuu Lighthouse.

"The reclassification should make future development of this portion of the Ka Iwi Coast a remote possibility in keeping with the wishes of the East Honolulu and Greater Oahu community," Lingle said in a statement.

Lingle noted, though, that the mauka area of Ka Iwi is not designated conservation and the potential for development remains.
