Maj. Gen. Joseph J. Chaves has been named U.S. Army Pacific's deputy commanding general for the Army National Guard.

U.S. Army Pacific Chief of Staff Col. A. Thomas Ball announced Chaves' promotion yesterday morning after Chaves pinned on his second star. Chaves has been assistant adjutant general of the Hawai'i Army National Guard since May 2009.

He enlisted in the Guard in 1970, earning his commission as a second lieutenant from the Hawai'i Military Academy three years later. Since then, he has held a variety of command and staff positions.

Chaves was activated for federal service in 2004, serving as the commander of the 29th Brigade Combat Team in Iraq until 2006.
