Volcom Pipeline Pro men's surfing contest opens today

The opening day of the Volcom Pipeline Pro men's surfing contest is on today.

Wave-face heights are in the 20- to 30-foot range at the Banzai Pipeline. The first two rounds are expected to run today. The competition for today is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. and end around 4:30 p.m.

More than 100 professional surfers from around the world are competing in the three-day event.

Among the Hawai‘i surfers expected to compete today are Ian Walsh, Jamie O'Brien, Mark Healey, Derek Ho and Kalani Chapman. The top-seeded surfers — such as Andy Irons, Bruce Irons, Fred Patacchia Jr. and Pancho Sullivan — will start competing on the second day.
