MEXICO CITY — Police have identified a suspect in the shooting of Paraguay soccer star Salvador Cabanas.

Mexico City Attorney General Miguel Angel Mancera identified the suspect as Jose J. Balderas Garza — known also as "El JJ" or "El Modelo." Mancera said Tuesday surveillance videos showed the suspect entering a bathroom in a bar with his bodyguard moments before the player was shot.

Cabanas was in critical but stable condition Tuesday, a day after he was shot in the head in a fashionable Mexico City neighborhood. Surgeons were unable to remove a bullet from his skull.
