The Waikiki Community Center is bringing locals and tourists together tomorrow for the 25th annual Ala Wai Challenge.

The nonprofit community center — which offers daycare, a food pantry, social services and enrichment classes for those who live and work in Waikīkī — makes an effort every year to offer a day of play and friendly competition. This year, it's doing so with help from Hawaiian Electric Co. and several other sponsors.

Managed by Jeff Apaka, the Ala Wai Challenge focuses on Hawaiian sports and camaraderie for Waikīkī visitors and locals alike. This year, the event honors Hawai'i sports legends Hannie Anderson and Tay Perry. It kicks off at 8 a.m. at Ala Wai Playground & Park with a traditional Hawaiian blessing, a canoe procession, Hawaiian and Tahitian dance and the release of 150 pigeons, which will mark the beginning of the makahiki games at 9 a.m., along with family-friendly entertainment, food booths and a Hawaiian marketplace.

The park is at the bottom of University Avenue on the mauka side of the Ala Wai Canal, so those heading there from Waikīkī can catch the "Canoe Taxi Service," which will pick visitors up at the corner of Ala Wai Boulevard and 'Olohana Street and ferry them to the park in double-hulled canoes.
