Collision on Big Island kills 17-year-old Pahoa boy

Advertiser Staff

HILO — A 17-year-old Pahoa boy died today from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash last night, Hawaii County police said.

The boy was injured in the crash of a Dodge pick-up and a Subaru sedan he was driving.
The accident happened shortly before 7 p.m. on Kahakai Boulevard in Hawaiian Beaches.
Police said the truck, driven by a 74-year-old Pahoa man, crossed the centerline and collided with the sedan.
Both drivers were taken to the Hilo Medical Center.
The boy was later flown to The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, where he died shortly after 2 this morning.
Two passengers in the pick-up, a 19-year-old man and 16-year-old boy, both of Pahoa, were not injured.
It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were involved, but speed was a factor in the crash.
Police have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy.
Anyone with information regarding this crash is asked to call Officer Clarence Davies at 961-8118.
This is the fifth traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to one at the same time last year.
