House committee to examine Hawaii judiciary budget

Associated Press

HONOLULU — The state House Judiciary Committee is set to examine budget cuts to Hawaii’s court system at a hearing on Tuesday.

The committee is to discuss the reduction in public services and programs at the courts, and how to address those cuts while the Legislature is in session.
Lawmakers convene their 2010 session on Wednesday.
According to the committee, the judiciary’s budget has been reduced by 7.6 percent, or $11.5 million, which has severely affected community outreach, victims and child protective services.
Committee officials say 4 percent of the judiciary’s payroll, or 79 positions, have been eliminated.
