Kahuku's Nehoa Akina is his team's key player, and was he ever locked in last night against Moanalua.

Akina hit six 3-pointers, including an amazing go-ahead 3 with 48 seconds remaining, and finished with 28 points as visiting Kahuku beat Moanalua, 58-53, in a battle of unbeaten O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East teams.

"I actually love shooting in this gym. I hit most of my shots in this gym out of all the gyms we play in," said Akina, a 5-foot-8 senior. "But, yeah, I was feeling really good tonight."

Kahuku (5-0) took its largest lead at 49-42 after a field goal by Mua Malufau with 5:12 left. Moanalua responded with an 11-3 run, capped by Marcus Keene's steal and layup, to take a 53-52 lead with 1:12 left.

Kahuku needed an answer and Akina responded by coming off a double screen at the top of the key and nailing a double-pump, 3-pointer from the right wing to make it 55-53 with 48 seconds left.

"I was coming off a screen, and at first I didn't see a defender," Akina said. "When I went up for the shot I saw him at the last second so I went up and under, and I was able to get the shot off."

Throughout the game, Nā Menehune tried to stay close to Akina, but he repeatedly got enough separation to get his shots off.

"He's always going to do stuff like that," Moanalua coach Greg Tacon. "He's a terrific player. He's one of the best we have in our state. He's a great shooter. We knew where he was and we were trying our hardest, but he hit some shots when we had people all over him."

After Nā Menehune missed a one-and-one attempt at the other end, Akina was fouled and hit both free throws to make it 57-53 with 27 seconds left.

Malufau added a free throw with 9 seconds left for the final margin.

Akina's performance shouldn't be seen as much of a surprise. He has taken his basketball very seriously for a long time.

"When he was about 2 1/2, 3 years old, I had my older sons shoot 250 shots a day," said Hiram Akina, Kahuku's coach and Nehoa's father. "At 3 years old he was doing the same thing that they were."

At that young age, Nehoa also logged his percentages on his family computer and posted the results on his wall, according to his father.

Kahuku, which spent most of the game in a 2-3 zone, got a nice lift from its bench at the start of the fourth period. Hiram Akina put in four reserves and Shairone Thompson, and it resulted in a 5-0 run, which put Kahuku up 45-40.

The lead reached 49-42 before Moanalua (4-1) made its run behind five points by Marcus Monroe and four by Wesley Armbrust.

Thompson added 11 points for Kahuku. Keene, a freshman, led Moanalua with 14.
