Whale carcass spotted off Punaluu beach park

Advertiser Staff

A whale carcass is about 100 yards off shore at Punaluu beach park and beachgoers are urged to avoid going into the water because of the potential for sharks.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department, said Ocean Safety officials patrolled the area and did not spot any sharks so no warning signs have been posted.
He said the Coast Guard, which did a helicopter flyover, the Department of Land and Natural Resources and NOAA have been informed.
Ocean Safety and other officials are at Punaluu beach park evaluating the area. The carcass was spotted around 9:20 a.m.
