Former University of Hawai'i-Hilo golfer Nick Mason gained one of four qualifying spots yesterday for this week's Sony Open in Hawai'i.
Mason, who gained entry into Monday's qualifier by shooting a 68 Sunday in a pre-qualifier, recorded a 7-under 65 yesterday at the Arnold Palmer Course at Turtle Bay.
Also qualifying were Aaron Goldberg (63), Jim Carter (64) and Spencer Levin (65). Goldberg is a Canadian Tour player from Carlsbad, Calif.
Mason, Levin and Robert Eaks each shot 65s and needed a playoff to determine the final two spots. Mason sank a birdie on the second playoff hole (No. 18) and Levin's birdie on the third playoff hole (No. 16) gave him the final spot.
The four qualifiers complete the 144-player field for the tournament that starts Thursday and ends Sunday at Waialae Country Club.
Those with local ties who did not qualify were Tony Finau (66), Scott Simpson (67), Sam Cyr (69), Travis Toyama (71), Jarett Hamamoto (73), Lorens Chan (73), Gipper Finau (74), Andrew Feldmann (76), Ryan Perez (78), Greg Meyer (79) and Casey Watabu (80).
Other notables who also missed out included Tim Herron (67), Esteban Toledo (67), Billy Mayfair (68) and Frank Lickliter II (68).
