Nick Mason, a former University of Hawai'i-Hilo golfer, shot a 4-under-par 68 yesterday to finish atop the Sony Open in Hawai'i Prequalifier at Turtle Bay's Palmer Course.

John Kelly finished one shot back, and Ryan Carter, Eric Meichtry and Ben Briscoe were three behind Mason. A total of 67 golfers competed in the event.

The top 50 and ties in yesterday's prequalifier will be joined by 32 PGA Tour members in today's qualifier at 8 a.m.

Other local players who will play in the qualifier are Travis Toyama (75, T13), Greg Meyer (76, T19), Ryan Perez (76), Casey Watabu (76), Lorens Chan (77, T27) and Sam Cyr (77).

Four from today will advance to the Sony Open in Hawai'i, which starts Thursday.
