Hiker falls to his death trying to rappel down ledge
Fire rescue crews this morning plan to retrieve the body of a man who fell to his death yesterday on the Makua side of Makaha Valley in the Wai'anae Mountains.
The man died while trying to retrieve equipment he had lost during a hike earlier in the week, according to Honolulu Fire Department spokesperson Capt. Robert Main.
The hiker and another man, both in their late 20s or early 30s, made their way to the site yesterday where the equipment had earlier fallen off a ledge.
The hiker apparently fell as he attempted to rappel down the ledge while his companion stayed on the trail, Main said.
An HFD helicopter transported the second man off the trail.
