BYUH drops PacWest opener

Tom Whitehead scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Dixie State to a 86-78 victory over Brigham Young-Hawai'i in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game last night at St. George, Utah.
Dixie State is 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference. BYUH, the defending PacWest champions, is 6-4 and 0-1.
Anthony Reilly scored 16 points and Virgil Buensuceso 15 for the Seasiders.
Dixie State led 45-38 at halftime.
BYUH's Lucas Alves, the preseason national player of the year, scored four points in 15 minutes in his second game since coming back from a knee injury.
HAWAI'I DIVISION II MEN
CHAMINADE 71, GRAND CANYON 62
Steven Bennett scored 30 points to lead Chaminade to a victory over Grand Canyon in Phoenix. The Silverswords, who led 36-28 at halftime, are 4-6 overall and 1-0 in the PacWest. Grand Canyon is 6-11 and 0-1.
HAWAI'I-HILO 66, NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR 51
Justin Smith scored 24 points as the Vulcans defeated the Argonauts at Belmont, Calif., for the their second PacWest victory. Lavell Shipman and Zachary Wilde each had eight rebounds for UHH (8-4 overall and 2-0 PacWest). Joshua Malloy scored 18 to lead Notre Dame de Namur (2-10, 0-1). The Vulcans led 29-19 at halftime.
HAWAI'I PACIFIC 80, ACADEMY OF ART 69
Mike Helton scored 26 points and C.J. Jackson had 14 points and 16 rebounds as the Sea Warriors defeated the Urban Knights at San Francisco. HPU, which led 41-38 at halftime, is 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the PacWest. The Urban Knights are 0-12 and 0-2.
HAWAI'I DIVISION II WOMEN
HAWAI'I PACIFIC 73, ACADEMY OF ART 54
Jazzmin Awa-Williams scored 13 points and Genesis Lewis added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Sea Warriors (6-4, 2-0 PacWest) at San Francisco. Lorraine Etchell had 16 points for the Urban Knights (5-8, 1-1). HPU led 33-24 at halftime.
GRAND CANYON 104, CHAMINADE 60
Kia Gibson scored 23 points as Grand Canyon routed Chaminade in the PacWest opener for both teams at Phoenix. Kellene Costello led Chaminade with 16 points. Grand Canyon, which led 57-30 at halftime, is 7-5 overall. Chaminade dropped to 1-8.
DIXIE STATE 77, BRIGHAM YOUNG-HAWAI'I 35
Shanae Vaifanua scored 11 points as Dixie State routed Brigham Young-Hawai'i at St. George, Utah. Dixie State is 5-5 overall and 1-0 in the PacWest. Mahina Gago had eight points and eight rebounds for the Seasiders (4-7, 0-1). Dixie State scored 48 points in the second half, after leading 29-13 at halftime.
NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR 75, HAWAI'I-HILO 58
Katie Zasly scored 20 points to lead Notre Dame de Namur past Hawai'i-Hilo at Belmont, Calif. Notre Dame de Namur is 5-7 overall and 1-0 in the PacWest. Hina Kimitete scored 14 points for the Vulcans, who are 3-10 and 0-2. Notre Dame de Namur led 33-21 at halftime.
RANKED WOMEN
NO. 1 CONNECTICUT 83, CINCINNATI 51
Maya Moore scored 25 points to lead Connecticut (14-0, 3-0 Big East) to a win over visiting Cincinnati (7-7, 0-2). Tina Charles added 17 points and had six of the Huskies' season-high 11 blocked shots as UConn extended its winning streak to 53 games.
NO. 4 TENNESSEE 79, SOUTH CAROLINA 62
Angie Bjorklund scored 23 points and Shekinna Stricklen added 21 to the Lady Vols (13-1, 1-0) to their 37th consecutive win over visiting South Carolina. It's their longest streak over any Southeastern Conference team. The Gamecocks last won on Jan. 23, 1980. South Carolina is 7-7 and 0-2.
NO. 8 GEORGIA 61, KENTUCKY 60, OT
Jasmine James hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining in overtime. Ashley Houts scored a career-high 27 points for the Bulldogs (15-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference). Kentucky is 12-2 and 0-1.
