A 60-year-old visitor from Japan was critically injured yesterday morning when a van hit her as she was walking in a crosswalk on Kai'olu Street in Waikíkí.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department, said paramedics were called to the intersection of Kuhio Avenue and Kai'olu just after 9:30 a.m.

Paramedics treated the woman and took her to a hospital in critical condition, Cheplic said. Police said she suffered a head injury and was taken to The Queen's Medical Center.

Police vehicular homicide investigators said the visitor was hit by an eastbound Plymouth Voyager minivan as it turned left from Kuhio Avenue onto Kai'olu Street. The woman was crossing Kai'olu Street from east to west.

The pedestrian was knocked to the ground and suffered a severe head injury, police said.

The van driver, from Waikíkí, was not injured.

Speeding, alcohol and drug use did not appear to be factors, police said.
