Häna Highway collision critically injures 2 drivers

Advertiser Staff

Two drivers were critically injured in a head-on collision Monday afternoon on Häna Highway, closing a curving stretch of the road fronting the entrance to Mama's Fish House while police investigated.

The crash was reported at 12:38 p.m. A white 2004 Nissan Altima sedan traveling in the Ha'iku direction was turning left into the driveway of Mama's Fish House and collided with a Kahului-bound silver 2001 Volkswagen, police said.

Both the Nissan driver, a 30-year-old Ha'iku man, and the 43-year-old Huelo man driving the Volkswagen suffered critical injuries that were initially considered life-threatening, police said. Both were taken by ambulance and admitted to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where their injuries later were upgraded to non-life-threatening, police said.

Police said neither driver was wearing a seat belt.
