Crews still battling blazes at Kealakekua, Hökükano

Advertiser Staff

Big Island firefighters continue to battle two large fires — one a 1,000-acre forest fire on Kealakekua Ranch and the other a 1,700-acre brushfire on Hokukano Ranch.

The fires were still not contained last night, but there have been no serious injuries or buildings damaged.

Hawai'i County Battalion Chief Marshall Luke said bulldozer breaks have been established around both fires and fire crews are manning the break lines. He said the fires were not contained and "could jump at any time."

Luke said the Kealakekua fire was in heavy timber. That fire has been burning since Dec. 23.

The Hokukano fire has been burning since Dec. 17.
