The Pearlridge Express will this weekend be boarding its last young passengers for the holiday season.

Up to 15 keiki may ride at one time on Hawai'i's only scale-model train for a journey through festive scenery in Uptown Center Court.

The attraction features historians from the Hawaiian Railway Society serving as docents. Ask them about the mechanical workings of the express and for stories about the Oahu Railway and Land Co., OR&L — a narrow-gauge rail system that served much of the island with 20 or so passenger trains daily until its dissolution in 1947. The system, which began rolling in 1889, was built primarily to serve the sugar plantations, which, up to then, had been hauling refined sugar to Honolulu's main port via schooner from small ports around the island.

The express will be chugging along 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and tomorrow, with rides departing every 10 minutes; tickets, $3. Passengers must be under 48 inches tall. Sorry, no adults allowed on board.
