AT&T Inc. said yesterday it would no longer sponsor Tiger Woods, joining Accenture in dropping support for the world's top golfer, who's taking a break from the sport to focus on his marriage after his admitted infidelity.

The phone company hasn't used Woods' image extensively in advertising, but its logo appeared on his golf bag. That deal had been billed as a "multiyear" agreement when it was signed early in 2009, after Buick ended its endorsement one year early because of its financial woes.

Woods has also been the host of the AT&T National PGA Tour event since it started in 2007. Tour spokesman Ty Votaw said that since Woods is on indefinite leave from professional golf, he will not serve as host for the 2010 event. However, his Tiger Woods Foundation will continue to be the beneficiary of the AT&T National, under a contract that runs through 2014, Votaw said.

AT&T said it would continue to sponsor the event.

AT&T, which is based in Dallas, did not comment on its reasons for dropping Woods, or how much the relationship was worth.

HOLYFIELD TO FIGHT

Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield will challenge Francois Botha for the lightly regarded WBF title in Kampala, Uganda on Jan. 16.

Organizers of the fight in Kampala's Nambole Stadium said yesterday that both fighters had signed contracts. A turnout of about 80,000 fans was predicted.

"I am looking forward to going to Uganda and I expect a tough fight against Francois Botha," said Holyfield (42-10-2), who has not fought since losing a points decision to Nikolai Valuev a year ago. The 47-year-old American believes a victory could give him a shot at a more prestigious title.

The same applies to Botha (47-4-3). The South African has lost to Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Wladimir Klitschko and Michael Moorer and retained his WBF title by drawing with Pedro Carrion of Cuba in Germany in October.

PASTRANA SETS RECORD

Travis Pastrana broke the world record for the longest jump in a rally car, making a nearly perfect flight from the Pine Street Pier onto a barge anchored in the harbor last night in Long Beach, Calif.

His jump was unofficially measured at 274 feet, which would smash the old record by 103 feet.

After teasing the crowd of several thousand with a warmup run down the 1,000-foot run-in and up the takeoff ramp, Pastrana did it for real, flying across the water to the landing ramp on the barge.

TOP AMERICAN HURT

American snowboarder Kevin Pearce sustained a head injury yesterday in training on the halfpipe at Park City, Utah.

Pearce, a top-ranked halfpipe rider, was knocked unconscious when he hit his head on the halfpipe during a training. He was taken to University of Utah hospital for surgery.

Neither his agent nor officials from U.S. Ski and Snowboarding offered immediate updates on Pearce's condition late last evening.
